White Sox take first game of homestand against Pirates (Chicago, Illinois) – After a day of rest following the city series against the Cubs, the White Sox started with Lucas Giolito at the mound to throw out the first pitch. He threw for 2 pop outs and a groundout to close the inning with no damage. In the top of the 2nd inning, Giolito threw for 3 strikeouts. In the bottom of that inning, White Sox batter Yasmani Grandal lined a ball to left center field for the first run of the night. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, White Sox batter Jose Abreu hit a homer to right field for another run for the White Sox. By the end of the 3rd inning, the Pirates trailed the White Sox 2-0. In the bottom of the 4th inning, all 3 White Sox batters flew out.

White Sox Fight to Maintain the Lead

In the 5th inning, Giolito threw out a wild pitch that let a Pirates runner continue to 2nd base. Soon after, Giolito threw another wild pitch that resulted in a run for the Pirates. After the run, Ryan Tepera relieved Giolito after 86 pitches. Pirates batter Colin Moran grounded an RBI single to tie up the game at 2-2 by the end of the 5th inning. In the top of the 6th inning, Michael Kopech replaced Tepera at the mound. In the bottom of the 6th inning, White Sox batter Brian Goodwin walked in an RBI to take the lead over the Pirates. Soon after, Leury Garcia was out on a sacrifice fly but managed slip in an RBI. By the end of the 6th inning, the White Sox pulled away from the Pirates with the score at 4-2. In the top of the 7th inning, White Sox batter Aaron Bummer replaced Kopech at the mound to throw for 3 consecutive groundouts. In the top of the 8th, White Sox batter Craig Kimbrel took the mound just to be replaced with Liam Hendriks in the top of the 9th. Hendriks closed the game with a flyout and a double play.
