Oak Lawn Public Library Heralds First Programs of 2023 (Oak Lawn, IL) — The Oak Lawn Public Library has announced their upcoming programs for early January 2023. They are as follows:

ADULT & TEEN PROGRAMS

  • Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Group / Monday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m.
    • An opportunity for family members, friends and caregivers to share their experiences with the challenges of Alzheimer’s or other dementias in a safe environment with people who are going through similar things.
  • “Where the Crawdads Sing” Book Discussion / Monday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.
    • Join us for a discussion of Delia Owens’s 2018 novel — the story of a young woman who was abandoned in the North Carolina marshlands by her mother when she was a little girl.
  • The Yarnery Club / Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.
    • Bring your handicraft projects—crochet, knitting or sewing—and spend an hour enjoying conversation while your needles do the work.
  • OLPL Film Club: “Where the Crawdads Sing” (2022) / Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m.
    • Join us to watch and discuss Olivia Newman’s adaptation of the best-selling novel “Where the Crawdads Sing.” When Kya’s former boyfriend is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect for his murder. PG-13. 125 minutes.
  • Planning for Your Financial Future / Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m.
    • Casey Wealth Management of Orland Park will discuss the key ages of retirement, tips for financial planning and answer questions.
  • “Where the Crawdads Sing” (2022) Movie Showing and Discussion / Thursday, Jan. 12 at 2 p.m.
    • Join us for a screening and optional discussion of Olivia Newman’s adaptation of the best-selling novel “Where the Crawdads Sing.” When Kya’s former boyfriend is found dead, Kya becomes the prime suspect for his murder. PG-13. 125 minutes.
  • VIP Library Tour / Friday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
    • Take a guided tour of what’s new all over the library. You’ll have a chance to ask questions, get a library card or update your PIN.
  • Oak Lawn Writers’ Group / Saturday, Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to noon
    • Readings, critiques and writing exercises for a variety of interests, including novels, short stories, poetry and non-fiction.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

  • Game & Puzzle Swap (All Ages, All Day) / Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Sunday, Jan. 8
    • Bring in a gently-used game or puzzle to swap for another. You will receive a coupon for each item you bring in. Redeem the coupon for another game or puzzle any time before Jan. 8.
  • CollabARTive Project: Home Sweet Community (All Ages, All Day) / Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Saturday, Jan. 7
    • Drop by to decorate our cutout buildings in your own unique style. When we put them all together, they’ll represent our community!
  • Craft-A-Palooza (All Ages, All Day) / Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Saturday, Jan. 7
    • Ring in the New Year and join us for our Craft-A-Palooza week. Come back for a favorite or a new-to-you craft. All while supplies last.
  • Science Club: 3-D Illusions
    • (Ages 5-7) / Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 10 a.m.
    • (Ages 8-10) / Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m.
    • (Ages 11-14) / Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
    • Learn about holograms and how they work, then produce your own! We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of each program.
  • Game Club Special Edition: Incan Gold (Ages 8-14) / Friday, Jan. 6 at 4 p.m.
    • Embark on an exciting hunt for temple treasures and artifacts. Will you forge ahead knowing danger is lurking around the bend? We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Lap-sit Storytime (Ages 6-24 months with a caregiver) / Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Stories, songs and movement supporting literacy development and learning in young children. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Preschool Storytime (Ages 3-5) / Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 10:15 a.m.
    • Stories, songs and movement supporting literacy development and learning in young children. To promote independence, we encourage children to attend without caregivers. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Toddler Storytime (Ages 2-3 with a caregiver) / Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Stories, songs and movement supporting literacy development and learning in young children. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Paper Airplanes (Ages 8-10) / Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 4:30 p.m.
    • Learn about the science behind flight and what makes paper airplanes soar. Kids will experiment with different styles of paper airplanes and compete to see whose can fly the farthest. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Kindergarten Readiness Storytime (Ages 4-5) / Thursday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m.
    • Stories, songs and movement supporting literacy development and learning in young children. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • Messy Art (Ages 2-3 with a caregiver) / Friday, Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Come for the fun, and leave the cleanup to us! Dress for a mess. We will distribute admission tickets at the Youth Services Desk 30 minutes before the start of the program.
  • 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Relaunch Party / Sunday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.
    • Start the year off by joining or continuing our reading challenge, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten! Whether you are new to the early literacy program or already registered, drop in for goodies, crafts, raffles and more!
