Chicago Man Charged with Child Abduction and Luring
Chicago Man Charged with Child Abduction and Luring (Chicago, IL) — A Chicago man is facing charges for Child Abduction and Luring of a Minor after Sheriff’s Police Detectives found he attempted to lure a minor into his vehicle, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
At approximately 4:43 p.m. on Monday, April 22, Sheriff’s Police responded to an incident that occurred in the 5000 block of South Long Avenue in unincorporated Stickney Township. Upon arrival, officers met with a witness who stated that a man driving a silver SUV followed a minor and attempted to lure the child into his vehicle. The witness also told officers that he drove off after she intervened by yelling and beeping her car’s horn at him.
Shortly after, officers met with the victim and learned that while walking home from school, the offender drove up to the curb and followed the child for approximately one block. The victim told officers that the offender would not leave and kept following.
Through their investigation, Detectives identified the offender as 39-year-old Arley Carrillo Mendez, of the 4900 Block of South Laramie Avenue. Mendez was later located at his residence and taken into custody without incident.
On Tuesday, April 23, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one count of Child Abduction and Luring of a Minor, a Class 4 Felony.
Mendez appeared today for his initial hearing at the Bridgeview Courthouse where a judge ordered him to the Sheriff’s Electronic Monitoring program.
The public is reminded that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
