Oak Lawn Public Library Announces January 2023 Programs (Oak Lawn, IL) — The Oak Lawn Public Library is pleased to announce ongoing and upcoming events that will take place from Jan. 16-31, 2023. Please note that all programs are listed in the library’s quarterly newsletter which was delivered to Oak Lawn households.

ADULT & TEEN PROGRAMS

  • Movie showing: “BlackKkKlansman” (2018) | Monday, Jan. 16 from 6:15-8:30 p.m.
    • A Black detective sets out to infiltrate the Colorado chapter of the Ku Klux Klan with the help of his Jewish colleague in the midst of the 1970s civil rights movement. Rated R, 135 minutes.
  • Technology programs:
    • Online Tools for Travel Planning | Thursday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m.
    • Getting Started with Spreadsheets | Monday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m.
    • Smartphone Tips and Tricks | Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m.
    • Google Apps and the Cloud | Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
  • Friends Film Screening: “Elvis” (2022) | Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 2-5 p.m.
    • A look at the life of the legendary rock and roll star, Elvis Presley. Rated PG-13, 159 minutes.
  • Beginner ESL | Thursdays, Jan. 19 & 26 at 9:30 a.m.
    • This half-hour class presents a fun review of common English vocabulary.
  • Book discussion groups:
    • Mysteries in the Morning: “In the Woods” by Tana French | Friday, Jan. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Refreshing Reads: “Half Life” by Jillian Cantor | Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Avenue Flower Shop & Wine Bar, 10632 S. Cicero Ave.
    • Graphically Speaking: “Always Never” by Jordi Lafebre | Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m.
    • Connections: “The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning” by Margareta Magnusson | Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 2:30 p.m.
  • Versiti Blood Drive | Saturday, Jan. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • The Versiti Blood Drive Bus will be coming to the library. Call 1-800-7TO-GIVE or visit donate.illinois.versiti.org/donor/auth/signin to sign up to donate. Please help us reach our goal to collect 14 donations and help supply 87 local hospitals! Be sure to eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating.
  • VIP Library Tour | Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. & Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
    • Take a guided tour of what’s new all over the library. You’ll have a chance to ask questions, get a library card or update your PIN.
  • Sunday with Friends Concert: Clarence Goodman: Chicago — city of big songs | Sunday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.
    • Clarence Goodman presents an hour of songs about Chicago along with stories about the songs.
  • Chicagoland Sports Trivia | Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 6:30-8 p.m.
    • Join sports fan Dave Tabel for a fun evening of trivia and prizes! Wear your favorite Chicago team sports jersey and get a free cone from Andy’s Frozen Custard. The champion walks away with a grand prize gift certificate to Fry the Coop.
  • National Puzzle Day Bonanza | Sunday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    • Celebrate National Puzzle Day by collaborating with Oak Lawn patrons on multiple puzzles on the second floor of the Library. How many can we finish in one day?
  • Planning for Your Service | Monday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. in English and at 2 p.m. in Polish
    • Michael Koslowski, Director of Family Services at Oak Lawn’s Chapel Hill Gardens South Funeral Home & Cemetery, has consulted with families in all situations. He’ll explain what kinds of planning and decisions are best to make before the end to avoid putting the family in crisis. Michael will present his talk in English and then in Polish.
  • Writing Your Ethical Will | Tuesday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
    • An ethical will makes your principles clear to your family, friends, heirs, trustees or executors. This workshop will be led by certified death doula and former hospice nurse Margaret England.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

  • Game & Puzzle Swap (all ages, all day) | Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Sunday, Jan. 8
    • Bring in a gently-used game or puzzle to swap for another. You will receive a coupon for each item you bring in. Redeem the coupon for another game or puzzle any time before Jan. 8.
  • CollabARTive Project: Home Sweet Community (all ages, all day) | Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Saturday, Jan. 7
    • Drop by to decorate our cutout buildings in your own unique style. When we put them all together, they’ll represent our community!
  • Craft-A-Palooza (all ages, all day) | Tuesday, Jan. 3 through Saturday, Jan. 7
    • Ring in the New Year and join us for our Craft-A-Palooza week. Come back for a favorite or a new-to-you craft. All while supplies last.
  • Baby Romp (ages 6-24 months with a caregiver) | Saturday, Jan. 28 at 9:30 a.m.
    • Drop by with your baby or toddler for movement activities and free play with other young children and their caregivers.
  • The Thing Fair (all ages) | Saturday, Jan. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • A showcase of all the wonderful things you can check out with your library card, beyond books. Join us for fun, games and prizes.
