Oak Lawn Public Library Announces Events in early November (Oak Lawn, IL) – The Oak Lawn Public Library is pleased to announce upcoming events that will take place from Nov. 1-15, 2022. Please note that all programs are listed in the Library’s quarterly newsletter which has been delivered to all Oak Lawn households.

Events

  • English Together (ESL): Join librarian and teacher Kate for a weekly ESL class for high beginners through intermediate learners on Thursdays from 9:30-11 a.m. in the Library’s second-floor Teen Room.
  • Youth Storytimes: Stories, songs and movement support literacy development and learning in young children. We’ll host Lapsit (ages 6-24 months), Toddler (ages 2-3), Preschool (ages 3-5) and Kindergarten Readiness (ages 4-5) storytimes every week throughout the month. Visit our calendar at cal.olpl.org for the exact dates and times for each storytime. All admission tickets for storytimes will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • App Beginner Workshops: Are you new to OLPL’s free apps? Bring your smart device to these half-hour workshop sessions and a librarian will walk you through all the steps to master each app. Workshops will be held on Mondays at 7 p.m., Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. through Nov. 30. You will need an email address and an OLPL library card to get started.
  • Story Explorers (ages 5-8)Let’s learn and laugh together with a mix of stories, games and fun on Tuesdays, Nov. 1 & 15 from 4-4:30 p.m. Admission tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • Blending Essential Oils for Your Health – A Make and Take Class: Join us on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. as Brittany Hogan demonstrates how to create essential oil blends that assist your body’s natural well-being. You’ll walk away with a free custom oil blend you’ve created. Register at cal.olpl.org as space is limited.

  • Picture This! (ages 9-12)Join us on Wednesdays, Nov. 2 & 9 from 4-4:45 p.m. as we use picture books to discover amazing facts, try new things, move around and laugh! Admission tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • Virtual Chair Yoga and Meditation: Join instructor Isabel Raci, C-IAYT, online for a gentle session of guided meditation and chair yoga on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. Register at cal.olpl.org for the program link.
  • Dinovember Family Party: Calling all dinosaur fans! Celebrate your favorites at our Dinovember party on Sunday, Nov. 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Activities include dinosaur print t-shirt stamping (please bring your own item to stamp), stop-motion dinosaur movies, games and crafts. Activities will take approximately 20 minutes to complete, while supplies last.
  • Create Your Own Cookbook with Canva: Collect your treasured recipes in an attractive digital cookbook using Canva on Monday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. or Thursday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. You can take your creation to get printed in town or online—a perfect gift for the holidays!   • Creativebug Craft: Join us on Monday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. to draw and paint a mixed media silhouette from a photo of a loved one (even a favorite pet!) and take it home, ready to frame. Register at cal.olpl.org.
  • The Yarnery Club: Bring your handicraft projects to the Library on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. and spend an hour enjoying conversation while your needles do the work.
  • Elephant and Piggie Draw Pigeon (ages 5-8)Help us celebrate Children’s Book Week by learning how to draw your favorite Mo Willems characters on Tuesday, Nov. 8 from 4-4:30 p.m. Admission tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.

  • OLPL Film Club: We’ll be discussing the movie “Jurassic Park” (1993) on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Library’s lower-level Mary Nelson Room.
  • Friends Movie Screening: The Friends of the Library will be showing the movie “Midway” (2019) on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the Library’s lower-level meeting rooms. The film tells the harrowing story of the Pacific Ocean battle over Midway Atoll that became a critical turning point in World War II. PG-13. 138 minutes.
  • Graphically Speaking Book Discussion: Join us on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. in the second-floor Book Club Nook to discuss “Come Home, Indio” by Jim Terry.
  • Tails and Tales – Dinosaurs: Enjoy entertaining dinosaur stories that will have you roaring on Sunday, Nov. 13 from 11-11:30 a.m.
  • Tabletop Game Crafters – Design, Make and Play Your Own Games: This two-session workshop will cover the basic features of tabletop games. We’ll brainstorm concepts and then set you loose with our amazing craft supplies on Monday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Then, join us on Monday, Nov. 21 at 6:30 p.m. for a fun night of playtesting. Space is limited, please register at cal.olpl.org.
  • Breast Cancer – Is it in Our Genes?: Join Jessica Dowling, Cristina Ruiz and Deb Oleskowicz on Monday, Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the first-floor café to talk about breast cancer and its relationship with our genes. This program is in partnership with Advocate Aurora Health.
