The data can be explored here, and provides detailed snapshots of the public safety landscape across the United States. Among the tools available on the website, one can view trends in violent crime dating back to 1986, look up crime statistics based on type of crime and year, and analyze various demographics for both offenders and victims of violent crimes.

The new data provided by the FBI offers confirmation of the effectiveness of the Orland Park Police Department’s efforts to curtail crime in the Orland Park area.

“Orland Park is known for its exemplary public safety record and our Police Department makes it their duty every day to ensure this remains the case,” said Orland Park Mayor Keith Pekau.

When comparing 2017 to 2022, the statistics reveal a 67% decrease in aggravated assault/ battery and a 38% reduction in theft offenses during the first six months of the year. Overall, crimes against persons in 2022 compared to 2017 are down 34% and reported property crimes are down 21% during this same period.

In partnership with the Village of Orland Park, Orland Square Mall’s implementation of the Youth Supervision Policy in 2021 has resulted in decreases in incidents of thefts across the board.

When reviewing statistics from Orland Square Mall, the decrease in crime from (Jan- June) 2017 when compared to (Jan-June) 2023 reflects a 40% decrease in theft from motor vehicles, a 51% decrease in burglary from motor vehicles, a 58% decrease in thefts over $500, a 78% decrease in theft under $500, a 36% decrease in retail thefts and an overall 55% decrease in thefts at this location.

“Our strong relationship with mall management has enabled the cooperation and support necessary to ensure a safe shopping experience for residents and guests,” said Orland Park Police Chief Eric Rossi who credits the decrease to the combined efforts of Orland Square management and the men and women of the Orland Park Police Department.
