Commissioner Monica Gordon Announces Advisory Council to Address Violence Prevention

BREAKING: Monica Gordon, Cook County Commissioner for the 5th District, Chosen as New Cook County Clerk Nominee (Cook County, IL) — Current 5th District Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon (D-Chicago Heights) has been selected to replace the late Karen Yarbrough as the Democratic nominee for Cook County Clerk in November’s election. Yarbrough passed away unexpectedly earlier this month.

Commissioner Gordon was elected as 5th District Commissioner in 2022 and has served in that role since. She previously held a seat on the Prairie State College Board of Trustees and is the current Bloom Township Democratic Committeeperson.

The meeting, held at IBEW Local 134’s hall, lasted about three hours and heard from multiple contenders vying for the seat. One of the candidates considered was State Senator Napoleon Harris, who was grilled by questioners regarding his lack of support for LGBTQ issues. Others who threw their hats in the ring included MWRD President Kari K. Steele, MWRD Commissioner Yumeka Brown, Cook County Commissioners Donna Miller and Kevin Morrison, and Evanston Clerk Stephanie Mendoza. Gordon, who garnered support from several unions, won after just one round of voting in a unanimous decision.

The Interim Clerk position will continue to be held by Deputy Clerk Cedric Giles will hold the seat until the end of the current term, which expires following the November election. The Republican has yet to slate anyone to run. Cook County Republican Party Chair Sean Morrison, however, says that they will be slating a candidate to face off against Gordon in November.
