Oak Lawn Public Library Announces Events and Closure in Early September  (Oak Lawn, IL) — The Oak Lawn Public Library is pleased to announce upcoming events that will take place from Sept. 1-15, 2022. Please note that all programs are all listed in the Library’s quarterly newsletter which will soon be delivered to Oak Lawn households.

  • Closures: The Oak Lawn Public Library will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day. The Library will also be closed on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10 for Fall on the Green. Please note that interlibrary loans are unable to be delivered to the Library when the parking lot is closed for Fall on the Green—this may delay the status of your holds.
  • Youth Storytimes: Stories, songs and movement support literacy development and learning in young children. We’ll host Lapsit (ages 6-24 months), Toddler (ages 2-3), Preschool (ages 3-5) and Kindergarten Readiness (ages 4-5) storytimes every week throughout the fall. Visit our calendar at cal.olpl.org for the exact dates and times for each storytime. All admission tickets for storytimes will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • Creativebug Craft: Make a braided cotton belt perfect for early fall fashions on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 6:30 p.m. Register at cal.olpl.org as supplies are limited.
  • Virtual Chair Yoga and Meditation: Join instructor Isabel Raci, C-IAYT, online for a gentle session of guided meditation and chair yoga on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. Register at cal.olpl.org. The program link will be emailed to registrants.
  • Graphically Speaking Book Discussion: Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in the Book Club Nook of the Library to discuss “Daytripper” by Fabio Moon.
  • Interactive Movie Kit – “Encanto” (2021): Pick up an interactive movie kit for “Encanto” (2021) beginning Monday, Sept. 12 at the Youth Services Desk. Each kit will include props, snacks and other fun family-friendly activities to keep everyone engaged with the movie. Activities are designed for ages 4 and up. One kit per family, while supplies last.
  • Craft Buzz! Online Craft Resources Workshop: We’ll meet in the Tech Center on Monday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. to get nerdy about online crafting. Bring your knitting, drawing, kitbashing—whatever you’re working on—and we’ll share our projects and online spaces for crafters.
  • Story Explorers (ages 5-8): Let’s learn and laugh together with a mix of stories, games and fun on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 4-4:30 p.m. Admission tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • OLPL Film Club: After a year of holding film club virtually, we’re meeting in person at the Library! Pick up a copy of “Parasite” (2019) at the Library and watch the movie at home on your own time. Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the lower-level Mary Nelson Room for a discussion.
  • Tech for the Golden Years: This six-class technology instruction series for adults ages 60 and over will give you some basic tools to help improve your computer skills. We will have two groups this fall and will be able to accept up to eight people per group. To enhance the experience, we are asking that participants be able to attend all six sessions of the series.   • Picture This! (ages 9-12): Picture books aren’t just for younger kids. Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 4-4:45 p.m. as we use them to discover amazing facts, try new things, move around, and laugh! Admission tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program at the Youth Services Desk.
  • Local Author Book Talk and Signing – Jim Nowoc: In “No String Attached: My Life Growing Up with the Birth of Rock N Roll,” Jim Nowoc describes his relationship with music from when he was a 14-year-old kid in Oak Lawn to serving in the Vietnam War. Jim will share stories, answer questions, and sign purchased books. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Fisher House, a supportive organization for veterans receiving medical care and their families.
  • Atrial Fibrillation and Anticoagulation – Is There Any Other Choice?: Join us on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. for this presentation by cardiologist Dr. Abdul Ghani, in partnership with Advocate Aurora Health. This is a hybrid program. Please register at cal.olpl.org if you plan to attend in person. The presentation will also stream live on our YouTube channel.
  • English Together (ESL): Let’s learn English together! Join librarian and teacher Kate on Thursdays, Sept. 15 through Dec. 15 from 9:30-11 a.m. for a weekly English language class (ESL). This class is designed for high beginners through intermediate learners. We will focus on interesting topics to learn how to increase your vocabulary and communicate confidently.
  • Well-Woman Exams – Importance, Benefits and What to Expect: Join us on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. for this presentation by OB-GYN Dr. Kristin Briscoe, in partnership with Advocate Aurora Health. This is a hybrid program. Please register at cal.olpl.org if you plan to attend in person. The presentation will also stream live on our YouTube channel.
  • Planning a Future for Your Family’s Past: Ancestors’ photos, stories, documents and heirlooms are part of your family’s past, and they deserve to be protected. Join us on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. as Marian Wood teaches us the PASS process for organizing and storing family history materials, sorting and curating your collection, and writing a genealogical will to keep them safe.
