Pritzker, Springfield Democrats Scramble To Come Up With Election Year Gimmicks on Public Safety (Springfield, IL) — After a blistering week for JB Pritzker and Springfield Democrats on their inaction in addressing the public safety crisis in Illinois, the majority party is now scrambling to come up with more election year gimmicks before the General Assembly adjourns for the year.

Last week:

  • Pritzker saw bipartisan rejection of some of his extreme Prisoner Review Board appointees, so extreme that they have even paroled cop killers. Refusing to acknowledge his mistake, Pritzker then proclaimed to the media that victims and their families WANT these criminals to be released or paroled early.
  • Jean Cable, the niece of murdered Police Sgt. James Severin whose murderer was paroled by Pritzker’s Prisoner Review Board in February 2021, had harsh words for Pritzker and his Prisoner Review Board: “I think Governor Pritzker has blood on his hands for releasing these inmates,” Cable said.
  • Dozens of criminals have reoffended from armed robbery to murder since January thanks to a new provision of the SAFE-T Act that allows criminals on home confinement 48 hours of unmonitored movement to roam freely.
  • Instead of working to right the wrongs of the SAFE-T Act and cracking down on criminals with penalty enhancements and mandatory minimums, Democrats in Springfield are trying to push for weak public safety measures such as anonymous tip lines and toothless commissions.

“No amount of election year gimmicks will replace the fact that Pritzker and the majority party pushed through one of the most dangerous, anti-police laws that betrayed law enforcement and is making our communities less safe throughout Illinois,” said Irvin for Illinois campaign spokesperson Eleni Demertzis. “The only real way to begin tackling the epidemic of violence in our state is to repeal the dangerous policies in the SAFE-T Act and focus on empowering our law enforcement agencies to keep families safe.”
