Karin Norington-Reaves Endorsed by Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (Blue Island, IL) — Today, Democratic candidate for Congress Karin Norington-Reaves announced endorsements from Former Representative Luis Gutiérrez, Emma and Tanya Lozano, the sister and niece of the late Rudy Lozano, and the former mayor of Blue Island, Domingo Vargas.

“Karin Norington-Reaves is the right leader to fight for the people of the First District and follow in Congressman Rush’s legacy of service,” said Gutiérrez. “Karin has led the creation of more than 100,000 good-paying jobs right here, and helped catapult people out of poverty and into sustaining careers. We need more of that experience in Congress.”

“We need leaders who will fight for social justice and systemic change both here at home and in the halls of Congress,” said Emma and Tanya Lozano. “Karin is that leader. Whether it’s teaching native Spanish speakers in Compton, her activism in college as Student Government President demanding more Black professors, to her work combating intergenerational poverty, and her support of a universal basic income, Karin has done the work and will stand up for all of us in Congress.”

“I am so humbled to have the support of these giants of service and activism for our city and state in my run for Congress,” said Norington-Reaves. “Harold Washington understood that we have to build coalitions and come together to create change and get things done for the people. As a child, I stayed up all night watching his successful election thanks to many, including the people who stand with me today, and I am grateful to have their support of my record creating jobs, systemic change, and economic opportunity for the 1st District.”

Norington-Reaves, a fluent Spanish speaker, has a demonstrated record of support for the Latino community. As CEO of the Chicago Workforce Partnership, she helped train and place tens of thousands of Latinx job seekers in employment, roughly 25% of The Partnership’s clients. She began her career as an elementary school teacher, where she created the school’s bilingual program. There she stood it up and insisted that Spanish-speaking kids be educated and tested in their native language.

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez served in Congress representing Illinois’ Fourth District from 1993- 2019. Gutiérrez was a champion for progressive causes – including sponsoring the first DREAM Act – in Congress, and was an integral part of the team to elect and support former Mayor Harold Washington.

Emma Lozano is a pastor at United Lincoln Methodist Church, a community activist focusing on education and workplace injustices, and like her brother, the late Rudy Lozano, worked to elect and serve former Mayor Harold Washington. Her daughter, Tanya, has continued the family’s legacy of service through her work for social justice and ending health disparities and was named Chicagoan of the Year by Chicago Magazine in 2020. Mayor Domingo Vargas served Blue Island as Mayor from 2013-2021, and as Alderman for twenty years prior.

Since her announcement, Norington-Reaves has also been endorsed by retiring Rep. Bobby Rush, IBEW Local 134, IUOE Local 150, The Collective PAC, Democrats Serve, and is on the NewDem Action Fund’s candidate watchlist.
