Commissioner Monica Gordon Announces Advisory Council to Address Violence Prevention (Cook County, IL) — Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon is convening an Inaugural Violence Prevention Advisory Council in an effort to address the issue from every direction. The 5th District Commissioner says she sees the prevention of violence in our communities as the single most important issue facing Cook County residents.
Last year, Cook County alone saw over 1,000-gun violence victims. It’s the leading cause of death among children, teens and young adults under 25-years-old.
“Gun violence causes psychologic trauma for individuals, families and entire communities,” says Gordon. “In the 5th District, which also includes parts of Chicago’s far South Side, gun violence has become especially pervasive, devastating communities already struggling with inequality, disinvestment and lack of emergency health services.”
The advisory council will look for ways to prevent violence of all kinds–murder, domestic violence, elder abuse, stalking, rape and the often-ignored disappearance of Black women and girls.
“Your involvement, as elected officials, community and business leaders is what it’s going to take to stop this growing public health crisis called violence,” says the south suburban commissioner. “We must go to the root causes and determine how to address it from every angle.”
Gordon says government is not the only solution, but it’s part of the solution.
