Co-Sponsor Sean Morrison and County Board Vote to Repeal Wheel Tax Bringing Tax Relief to Suburban Residents (Orland Park, IL) – As an Amendment Co-Sponsor, Cook County Commissioner Sean Morrison of the 17th District is pleased to announce the repeal of the Cook County Wheel Tax, effective June 30, 2023. The Wheel Tax is considered to be the most administratively burdensome tax for both the Dept. of Revenue and the residents of unincorporated Cook County. Today, it was repealed by a unanimous vote of the Cook County Board.

“Anytime we have an opportunity to cut or eliminate taxes it’s always the right thing to do for Cook County taxpayers. The Wheel Tax provided plenty of consternation for residents of unincorporated Cook County. Relieving them of the administrative and financial stress is a win for suburban residents,” stated Commissioner Sean Morrison.

Unlike most of Cook County’s Home Rule Taxes, which are remitted to the Dept. of Revenue by businesses filing monthly returns, the Wheel Tax is remitted directly to the Dept. of Revenue by the residents of unincorporated areas as a result of the Dept. of Revenue issuing tens of thousands of tax notices.

Recently, numerous municipalities have repealed their own Vehicle Sticker program for similar reasons and more. The repeal of the county’s Wheel Tax will allow the Dept. of Revenue to redirect staff resources away from the time consuming and burdensome task of administering the Wheel Tax.
