Chicago Heights Mayor Gonzalez receives Mayor of the Year award from Southland Black Chamber (Chicago Heights, IL) – The Southland Black Chamber of Commerce & Industry awarded Mayor David A. Gonzalez with their 2021 Mayor of the Year award. Mayor Gonzalez has served as the Mayor of Chicago Heights, IL for 10 years.

Mayor Gonzalez boasts a long-standing career in politics and civil service. He is also a Certified Public Accountant and is a managing partner in GW & Associates, an accounting firm with locations in Chicago Heights and Hillside. Gonzalez is a former Police and Fire Commissioner for the city, and also served as Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer for the Chicago Heights Park District in the past.

“The Southland Black Chamber of Commerce and Industry is an active, thoughtful, and important leader in the economic development of the region, so I am deeply honored and flattered by being awarded the Chamber’s ‘Mayor of the Year’ award,” said Mayor Gonzalez. “A healthy, vibrant African-American business community is a central pillar to economic prosperity in Chicago Heights and the southland region more broadly, and I remain committed to supporting their businesses, job growth, and the economic security of our community.”

Chicago Heights resident Ada Williamson said, “Whether it is street and sidewalk repair, snow removal, bringing new businesses to town, or more recently organizing the COVID-19 vaccine sites in the city, Mayor David Gonzalez has improved the daily lives of people like me, and he is bringing Chicago Heights back to life.”

When asked about the Chamber’s selection in Mayor Gonzalez, Dr. Cornel Darden Jr., President/CEO of the Southland Black Chamber of Commerce stated, “Mayor Gonzalez has proven himself to be extremely committed to bringing economic development to Chicago Heights. We have worked closely with him and several of his team, and are pleased to say that he has been a champion for Black business every step of the way. I am very honored to have met such a caring, intelligent, and committed Mayor.”

Dr. Darden continued, saying of the award, “Each year, we aim to bring attention to a mayor within our service region who has shown that they are committed to create a positive impact in their communities. We have been honored to have worked with so many amazing elected officials such as Mayor Gonzalez and last year’s recipient, Mayor Vanderbilt.” The 2020 awardee was Park Forest Village President Jonathan Vanderbilt.

According to Chicago Heights’ website, a Comprehensive Plan has been put to work to improve infrastructure, attract businesses, and entice industrial growth. Chicago Heights works closely with the Chicago Heights Economic Development Corporation, which, in part, aids the city in identifying and marketing opportunities for economic growth.
