Brian Mullins and the Young Government Organization Catering to Independent Government Voters (Southland, Chicago) – Brain Mullins doesn’t simply want you to vote for the people he wants. He wants to educate you to make informed decisions and not just submit a cruise control ballot. He has formed the League of Independence, a branch of young government in an effort to advance that initiative.

“We have seen a trend over the last 30 years that the Democratic Party has had a stronghold over the electorate in Illinois. And especially now when you have Democrats at the federal level controlling the presidency, House of Representatives, Senate and in Illinois holding the governor, state house and state senate,” said Mullins. “We want you to understand that you have more than one choice, especially for our black community and in the Southland, since we tend to only vote Democrat. You can be an independent voter and not just vote party lines.”

As a man who has been well entrenched in politics for years, Mullins understands that history has played an essential role in why many in the black community vote for one party. But he believes there are too many important issues such as education, jobs and violence not to diversity, hedge and bring some leverage to the table and get return on investment for your vote.

“To be honest there hasn’t been one political party that has addressed all the issues in the black community especially in Southland, one thing we tend to do is put all our eggs in one basket. If that elected official doesn’t do what they are supposed to do for the Southland, then what do you do next?”

Barbershop Conversations

His organization started a barbershop tour a few years ago where elected officials or potential candidates come to these shops to talk about important political and social issues. Even if the politicians are not able to come, there are representatives that show up and drive the discussion.

“The barbershop is the unspoken place where we all meet, we talk and we discuss issues while getting our haircut. I believe it has been highly successful. We have taken elected officials into these places that they have never been before, and when they walk out, the people in the barbershop say this is good because politicians never talk to us or ask us our opinions. We are not telling you who to vote for but we want to expose you to Democrats, Republicans and Independents,” he added.

Current Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, the Democratic governor, made a large contribution to his own reelection campaign. A $90 million contribution by Pritzker, a billionaire himself, was disclosed through filings on the Illinois State Board of Elections Website.

“In Illinois what better form of voter suppression than Gov. J.B. Pritzker dropped millions of his own money to stave off any challengers,”  said Mullins.

Chicago billionaire Ken Griffin also promised to go “all in” to support an opponent to beat Pritzker. Griffin is an American hedge fund manager, entrepreneur and investor whose estimated net worth makes him one of the richest people in the United States.
