Village of Flossmoor Invites Community to Participate in Day of Service (Flossmoor, IL) — In 1994 Congress declared Dr. King’s federal holiday a National Day of Service. Over the last two decades, millions of people have given back on this day. Since 2015, the Village of Flossmoor, along with its partners, has participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Day of Service in honor of Dr. King’s legacy. As a community, we have hosted hundreds of local projects, committed thousands of hours of service, and expanded the reach of our projects to many of the surrounding communities. And the volunteerism in Flossmoor continues beyond this one single day with a vibrant volunteer force all year round.
The Flossmoor Community Relations Commission (CRC) invites you to host a service project on January 16. Service projects are as varied as the agencies that host them. Some examples include park and community property clean up, community food drives, snow removal for seniors, making sandwiches for shelters, donating blood, and so much more.
In order for a project to qualify for the Day of Service it must:
- Be conducted on the third Monday in January
- Collections (food, socks, other items) can be conducted up to the third Monday in January; with the hope that a delivery will occur during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
- The project does not generate any current or future sales or revenue for the hosting agency (i.e., books sales, thrift sales)
- Projects should be local to the communities in which we live and serve
- There must be a volunteer present on the day of the event to host the project
