Vehicle Fleeing Police in Harvey Results in Fatal Crash (Hazel Crest, IL) — A vehicle fleeing the scene of a disturbance in Harvey crashed in Hazel Crest Tuesday night, leading to at least two fatalities. A 9-1-1 call placed by a clerk at the Shell gas station on the southeast corner of 159th St. and Dixie Hwy. in Harvey complained that an irate woman with a gun was vandalizing the store.

According to a statement by a City of Harvey representative, a police officer responded to the call and upon arrival, the officer ran the license plate of the vehicle. It is not clear at this time if the vehicle’s license plate returned any contributing information.

The suspected vandal got into the vehicle and proceeded to drive southbound on Dixie Hwy. at a high rate of speed. The Harvey police officer followed in pursuit as it left Harvey and traveled down Dixie Hwy. into Hazel Crest at a high rate of speed, where it swerved to avoid another vehicle, lost control, and crashed into a sign at 170th St. The vehicle was split in two and all three of the occupants were ejected. Two died at the scene and another was transported to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn in critical condition. There are unconfirmed reports that the third victim has also perished.

According to a Harvey spokesperson, the Harvey officer involved in the incident was following at least one mile behind the fleeing vehicle at the time of the crash. The officer’s name has not yet been released, however it is confirmed that the officer remains on duty as the investigation into the incident is under way.

The Hazel Crest Police Department released a statement saying that they are actively investigating the crash along with the Suburban Major Accident Crime Reconstruction Team (SMART). The Illinois State Police and Cook County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene assisting with the investigation.

An autopsy on the victims is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
