Urban League of Northwest Indiana to Host Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Symposium May 17th (Valparaiso, IN) – The Urban League of Northwest Indiana will present its 2022 Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Symposium Tuesday, May 17, at Valparaiso University, Harre Union. The Symposium will begin at 9:00 am with an interactive session that includes high school students from throughout the region. Youth will take part in discussions that involve a variety of topics including “Critical Race Theory”, poverty inequity and anti-voting rights bills.

“We thought it was important to include the perspectives and reactions of our young people,” said Urban League of NWI President and CEO Dr. Vanessa Allen-McCloud. “They will add a lot of value to this dialogue and solutions on where we go from here.”

Following the opening sessions, separate workshops will be held for youth and adults as well as panel discussions during lunch.

“We want to pack as much information and discussions in the time we have as possible,” added Allen-McCloud. “The current climate in which we live requires us to tackle issues of diversity, equity and inclusion head on.”

Portions of the event will be broadcast live via the Urban League’s Facebook page.

Participating schools include the following:

  • West Side Leadership Academy
  • Highland High School
  • Calumet New Tech High School

The Climate Crisis Is Worse Than You Can Imagine. Here’s What Happens If You Try. – Peter Kalmus, out of his mind, stumbled back toward the car. It was all happening. All the stuff he’d been trying to get others to see, and failing to get others to see — it was all here. The day before, when his family started their Labor Day backpacking trip along the oak-lined dry creek bed in Romero Canyon, in the mountains east of Santa Barbara, the temperature had been 105 degrees. Now it was 110 degrees, and under his backpack, his “large mammalian self,” as Peter called his body, was more than just overheating. He was melting down. Everything felt wrong. His brain felt wrong and the planet felt wrong, and everything that lived on the planet felt wrong, off-kilter, in the wrong place.
