Southland Leader Monica Gordon Named a ‘Woman of Excellence’ (Chicago Heights, IL) — Southland leader Monica Gordon has moved the needle once again, this time by being a recipient of the Chicago Defender 2022 Women of Excellence award. The Democratic nominee for 5th District Cook County Board of Commissioners was humbled to be selected for this esteemed distinction. “I am absolutely floored that I have been selected to be a Woman of Excellence this year,” said Monica. “I am privileged to be in a position of service and leadership within the Southland community and am elated to be participating as an awardee this year.”

The Chicago Defender’s Women of Excellence Awards celebrate local African-American women who inspire others through their vision and leadership, exceptional achievements, and participation in community service. On Friday, September 16, 2022, the Chicago Defender Women of Excellence Awards will be celebrating their 15th year, and will induct Monica Gordon into their newest class of honorees. “Being an award recipient is exciting, humbling, and gives me encouragement to continue to fight for women’s rights, economic development, infrastructure, and everything else we need in our communities to ensure positive growth,” Monica declared. She continued, “Receiving this award is not a celebration of things accomplished, but is encouragement and further motivation to continue this journey for my community. I am looking forward to seeing where this journey takes us together.”

Monica Gordon was elected as the Democratic Nominee for 5th District Cook County Commissioner, beating out 3 other candidates during this past Primary Election in June. She received the endorsement of retiring 5th district commissioner Deborah Sims. At the same time, Monica also won the seat of Bloom Township Democratic Committee Person.

Monica currently serves on the Prairie State College Board of Trustees as board secretary. In addition to her career as public servant, Monica also serves on several nonprofit boards, including the Chicago Southland Economic Development Corporation, Girls 4 Science, and the JASSAC foundation. She is currently the Director of Government and Community Relations for Chicago State University.
