Sen. Bernie Sanders Endorses Jonathan Jackson for Congress, Will Appear in Chicago for Public Announcement (Chicago, IL) — Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced that he is endorsing Jonathan Jackson in the Illinois 1st Congressional District race. “I am proud to endorse Jonathan Jackson for Illinois’ 1st Congressional District today,” Sanders said in a statement. “Jonathan has been a fighter for working people for decades, and I know he will fight on their behalf in championing Medicare for All and a Green New Deal when he is in the Congress.”

Sen. Sanders plans to be in Chicago on June 16 for a “Fighting Back Against Corporate Greed” rally at Teamsters Local 705, 1645 W. Jackson Blvd., and June 17, to deliver the keynote address to the Labor Notes Conference meeting at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont. Jackson says he will join Sanders at the rally.

Regarding Sanders’ endorsement, Jackson said, “It means that he looks forward to welcoming me to the capital and my being part of the congressional support to further our goals, which includes Medicare for All, voter protection, clean environment, and other important legislative initiatives.”

Jackson referred to his longtime friendship with Sanders that dates to first meeting in 1988 when Sanders was the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and Jonathan’s father, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., was running for U.S. President. Since then, Jackson said, “I’ve admired [Sanders’] policies, compassion, and consistency.” Sanders is serving his third term in the U.S. Senate. His previous 16 years in the House of Representatives make him the longest serving independent in U.S. congressional history.

Jackson previously demonstrated his support of Sanders when the senator ran for U.S. President. “I was proud to be a surrogate for Bernie Sanders in his 2016 presidential campaign and serve as a delegate for him in his 2000 presidential campaign,” Jackson pointed out.
