Non Profit Natural Hair Foundation and Academy Empowers a Community (Joliet, IL) — On October 18th, Fusion Natural Hair and Braid Academy officially became the first of its kind in the southwest suburb to open its doors to the public to educate natural hair and braiders to fulfill the requirement of the Illinois Department of Professional Financial Regulation for obtaining a hair braiding license in Illinois.
In 2021, licensed cosmetology instructor LeAnn Drake formed a natural hair care non-profit foundation that empowered her community through workshops, events, and education for individuals and families in need. With over two decades of experience in cosmetology and education, she saw the need to form a comprehensive program that covers how to care for natural hair professionally. She is committed to providing her students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in the beauty industry to become professionals. She aims to promote self-confidence in her community, enhance well-being, and foster a sense of belonging and connection among the people she serves. “I want my students and my community to be empowered,” says LeAnn, “with more people being interested in the benefits of natural hair, I want the academy to be a resource and a pillar to educate themselves, enhance their skills, or start a business in the beauty industry.”
LeAnn’s idea of opening Fusion Natural Hair & Braid Academy came from wanting to build something in the community she grew up in after her cosmetology instructor encouraged her to become an educator. Shortly after becoming an educator, she realized she had the power to influence her community by educating people about natural hair. She wants people to be empowered after completing the programs or attending her events.
