Illinois Grocery Tax Elimination will cost Village of Broadview $275,000 (Broadview, IL) — In western Cook County, the Village of Broadview is facing a significant financial challenge following the Illinois General Assembly’s approval of Governor JB Pritzker’s plan to eliminate the 1% state grocery tax. This decision will result in an annual loss of $275,000 in tax revenue for the Village.

During the village board of trustees meeting on June 3, Mayor Katrina Thompson expressed concern about the impact of this loss on the Village’s budget and services.

“Because we are a small community of approximately 7,500 residents, the loss of $275,000 in annual revenue is a substantial blow to our community,” Thompson stated. “We are committed to preserving the safety and security of our residents, and I am determined to avoid any cuts to our fire and police departments’ budgets.”

Thompson acknowledged the difficult choices that lie ahead for the Village Board of Trustees.

“We are going to have to make some tough decisions to make up for this lost revenue,” Thompson said. “However, I am confident that we will find a way to maintain essential services and continue to invest in our community.”

The Village of Broadview will be exploring various options to address this budgetary shortfall.

“The Board of Trustees will work diligently to develop a balanced budget that prioritizes the needs of residents while ensuring the long-term financial stability of the Village,” Thompson said.
