Cook County Commissioner\ Monica Gordon, Hires District Director (Markham, IL) — Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon (5th district) has hired Village of Lansing Trustee Micaela Smith as her district director. Smith brings to her new role extensive experience as the former Manager of Community Relations & External Affairs for Thornton Township, former Assistant Director of Government Affairs & Community Relations for Chicago State University and former Chief of Staff for State Representative Marcus C. Evans Jr. In her leadership roles she has served as a park commissioner for Lan- Oak Park District and as a former member of the Lansing Human Relations Commission.

Smith made history in April 2021, when she became the first African American elected to the Lansing Village Board. She also was the youngest and only female on the board. The Lansing resident brings more than 15 years of valuable experience in state and municipal government as well as civic involvement to her new position.

“I’m grateful for this opportunity to expand my knowledge in Cook County government and service. I’ve worked at the state, city and township levels of government. I have gained mutual respect, friendships and relationships built over time,” says Smith. “As director of Cook County’s 5th District, I will be working to ensure Commissioner Gordon stays connected and responsive to her constituents.”

Smith also serves as chair of Lansing’s Economic Development and Lansing Municipal Airport committees.
