Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon Comments on Proposed Budget for 2024 (Markham, IL) — Cook County 5th District Commissioner Monica Gordon released the following statement regarding the county’s proposed 2024 budget:

“As a new member of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, I am fortunate to serve at a time when the county is expanding its safety net to improve the lives of our residents in the city of Chicago and the south suburbs. Cook County’s 5th District, which includes Chicago’s far South Side, Harvey, Riverdale and Ford Heights is under resourced. Therefore, we need a budget that takes into account how we can continue to lift up our residents and communities without the added burden of raising taxes or fees. I commend President Toni Preckwinkle’s perseverance to achieve equity in health care, safety, infrastructure and internet access.

“As elected officials, we need to keep our focus on ensuring equity in everything we do throughout the entire county. Violence prevention, medical equity and water infrastructure are my three priorities.

“Over the next weeks, the county’s proposed $9.14 billion budget will be dissected, debated and decided by every commissioner advocating for their respective districts. I commend President Preckwinkle for giving us a well-thought-out roadmap that addresses our immediate needs while preparing for the future.”
