Congressman Jonathan Jackson Applauds Selection of Blacks in Green as an Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Center in Chicago (Chicago, IL) — Congressman Jonathan Jackson congratulates Blacks in Green (BIG), a Chicago-based organization, on being selected as one of the 17 Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers (EJ TCTACs) across the nation. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced this selection as part of a $177 million investment to help underserved and overburdened communities access funds from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, including historic investments to advance environmental justice.

“I am thrilled to see Blacks in Green being recognized for their outstanding work in addressing environmental justice issues in Chicago,” said Congressman Jackson. “This crucial funding will help BIG to continue their mission of empowering communities to create sustainable, self-sufficient, and healthy neighborhoods.”

Blacks in Green will receive at least $10 million to remove barriers and improve accessibility for communities with environmental justice concerns. The organization will provide training and assistance to build capacity for navigating federal grant application systems, writing strong grant proposals, and effectively managing grant funding. Additionally, they will offer guidance on community engagement, meeting facilitation, and translation and interpretation services for limited English-speaking participants.

“The selection of Blacks in Green as an EJ TCTAC demonstrates the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to supporting and strengthening communities that have been historically overlooked and underserved,” added Congressman Jackson. “This investment will enable BIG to expand their reach and provide vital resources to promote environmental justice and sustainable development in Chicago and beyond.”

The EJ TCTACs will work in partnership with a network of over 160 organizations, including community-based organizations, academic institutions, and Environmental Finance Centers, to ensure comprehensive coverage for the entire United States. The program is part of the Federal Interagency Thriving Communities Network and delivers on the Biden-Harris Administration’s Justice40 Initiative to ensure that 40% of the benefits of certain federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities.
