Commissioner Aguilar Partners with Board of Review for Property Tax Appeal Workshops (Cook County, IL) — From August 31st to September 16th, Cook County Commissioner Frank J. Aguilar partnered with Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas and 16th District officials to host property tax workshops to help residents appeal their assessments. The events were held in communities that suffered damages from the early July storms and flooding. The workshops were located in Berwyn, Cicero, Stickney and Riverside Townships.
“Throughout Cook County, homeownership is one of the best ways to ensure some sort of generational wealth,” said Commissioner Aguilar. “Giving residents the tools they need to successfully appeal their property tax assessments is critical, especially after major weather events that can damage one’s property. We must emphasize accessibility and bring in all levels of government to ensure residents are able to receive this information and utilize the appeal process. I’d like to thank Commissioner Cardenas and all the local officials, including the 16th District township assessors, who helped make these events possible.”
Homeowners who attended these workshops went through the process of filing an appeal on their property tax assessments with trained professionals and local officials. After a presentation and a question and answer segment, homeowners had the opportunity to fill out their appeals with Board of Review and local Assessor staff members.
This year the Board of Review will focus on helping Cook County residents who are victims of this summer’s flooding to know their rights and apply for all County property tax assistance for which they are eligible.
“If you were a victim of this summer’s floods, it’s important you know you are eligible for help with your assessment from the Board of Review,” said Commissioner Cardenas. “My staff is holding events across Cook County to walk taxpayers through the flood relief process.”
