Calumet City Council Meeting: 9/09/2021 – The Calumet City Council meeting on Sept. 9 saw council members announcing a slew of dates for residents to keep a lookout for:

  • Ald. Ramonde Williams, of the 4th ward, said the Calumet City Police Department is looking for lateral entry police officers, with applications due on Sept. 15. According to a posting about the position, applicants must be non-probationary, sworn law enforcement officers that have been  employed for atleast two years but no more than 10 years. They must also be in good standing at the agency in which they served, completed the state certified police officer training board requirements, be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age but no older than 35. He also announced two other items:

    • On Sept. 18 Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi will at Thornton Township at 11 a.m. to answer questions about their taxes;

    • On Sept. 25, there will be an impromptu clean up in the city. For more information call 708-891-8194.

  • After five of Mayor Thaddeus Jones’ appointments for the library board were approved by council members, he said the new officers will have a meeting on Sept. 28, with an official meeting on Sept. 30.

  • Ald. Michael Navarrete, of the 1st ward, said the public works committee plans to hold a meeting toward the end of the month and are working to lock down a date, which will be announced soon. Navarrete also announced the “Walk the ward” event, which will be held Saturday Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. It will be a family friendly event that will serve as an outreach effort as part of the 1st ward’s development of a comprehensive plan. The plan will contain goals, strategies and a vision for the ward and will be informed by resident input. Navarette said the purpose of the plan is to “revitalize neighborhoods, enhance quality of life and make sure our businesses thrive.” The document will also help bring more resources to the community.

  • Ald. Monet Wilson announced a back to school event on Sept. 10 held by Calumet City School District 155. The district is located at 540 Superior Ave, Calumet City, IL 60409. She also said on Sept. 13, there will be a 2nd ward meeting at the Calumet City Pubilc Safety Training Center at 24 State Street at 6 p.m. Masks are required. The Calumet City Chargers will hold their homecoming at TF North.

  • Ald. DeJuan Gardner said there will be a townhall conversation with the Mayor at 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Jesus Shepherd of Souls, 768 Lincoln Ave. The gymnasium entrance for the event is at Gymnasium Entrance, 155th & Freeland Ave. Face masks are required.

  • Ald. Anthony Smith said 7th ward meetings will begin in October and a schedule for the meetings will be posted on Sept. 23. Smith also said the Public Utilities committee plans to meet sometime next week or the week after. A date for the meeting will be announced sometime soon.
