BREAKING: Nationwide DMV Outage Reported (Chicago,IL) —UPDATE: Services were down for approximately 3 hours and have since been restored. The original story is below:

A little after 10:00 AM, the Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and the Illinois Secretary of State’s office announced that there is an outage affecting DMV facilities.

The advisory, which was shared on Facebook, states that all DMVs across the entire country are currently experiencing an outage of sorts. According to the post, they are, “currently experiencing a nationwide network outage,” and, “All DMV’s across the country are currently down.”

They ask that the public please call 800-282-8980 before attempting to visit, as operating hours and services offered are being affected.

It is currently unclear what exactly the nationwide outage is stemming from and no further reports have been made. There has been no timeline announced as to when we can expect services to be back up and running.

According to their website, “The duties of the Secretary of State’s office are divided among 21 departments employing approximately 4,000 people.

“The office’s functions are described in the Illinois Constitution, mainly addressing the Secretary of State’s duty to maintain official state records and the state seal. However, law and tradition have assigned many additional responsibilities to the office, which has one of the largest and most diverse collections of responsibilities of any of its counterparts nationwide.”

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office offers a variety of services, both online and in-person. Their services include driver license issuance and renewal, state identification issuance and renewal, vehicle registration, and a wide variety of business services, including business registrations, nonprofit registrations, trademark filings, and more. The Illinois Secretary of State also handles organ and tissue donor registrations, the state archives, and the Illinois State Library.

Currently, it appears that their online services are working.

This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.
