The Homeschool Legal Defense Association Action PAC Endorses 1st Congressional District Candidate Pastor Chris Butler (Chicago, IL) — US congressional candidate for the 1st District of Illinois Pastor Chris Butler has been endorsed by the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) Action PAC, a national organization which has as its primary purpose the protection of the right of parents to teach their children at home.

The HSLDA Action PAC affirms Pastor Chris Butler in a statement, “Your pro-family positions, as well as your commitment to the rights of homeschoolers make you a defender of the foundational freedoms that have made this country flourish. The values you represent are crucial in our fight to continue preserving homeschool freedom for families across the country. We are committed to supporting you and making your campaign a success.”

The HSLDA represents the rights of over two million homeschool students and their families in all 50 states, thousands of whom live in Illinois. The HSLDA Action PAC focuses on funding grassroots efforts by deploying teams of volunteers and empowering them to make a difference.

In an Essence magazine article titled “Homeschooling Continues to Surge in Black Households Despite In-Class Return,” Rayna Reid discusses how homeschooling numbers have begun to increase among Black communities in the US. Before the pandemic, around 3% of students were being homeschooled in the US. In 2020, that number increased by 63% and only fell by 17% in 2021. In the past couple of decades, homeschooling families have been predominantly white. However, in the past few years the largest increase in homeschooling was among Black families, with a fivefold increase.

Pastor Butler’s wife Aziza founded WeSchool Academy, LLC, a homeschooling support organization on the southside of Chicago. Aziza has been flooded with requests for homeschooling support for new families, which includes defense of parental rights and family values. Pastor Butler and his team are passionate about protecting the rights of homeschooled children.

Pastor Butler, whose name was recently drawn for the top spot on the IL-1 ballot, has been connecting with voters and communities since March of 2021. Pastor Butler’s background highlights his ability to bring unity between diverse groups. The Senior Pastor of the Chicago Embassy Church Network, he has launched various initiatives serving at the local, state, and national level. For example, Pastor Butler worked in education reform as Deputy Campaign Manager for A+ Illinois and as Advocacy Director for New Schools for Chicago. Pastor Butler also co-founded the Chicago Peace Campaign to reimagine public safety, as well as the AND (&) Campaign, a nonprofit organization which promotes civic engagement nationwide. He recently co-authored the award-winning book Compassion & Conviction.
