The Athletics couldn’t keep up with the White Sox defense or offense (Chicago, Illinois) – White Sox pitcher Reynaldo Lopez took the mound to throw out the first pitch at Guaranteed Rate Field today. In the top of the 2nd inning, the White Sox defense caught the Athletics in a double play to bring the game to the bottom of the 2nd. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Athletics pitcher gave up 3 consecutive singles before he was swapped out with Burch Smith. Smith then threw for a 2-run single on White Sox batter Andrew Vaughn. Next batter up was White Sox player Jake Lamb, who crushed the first ball that was tossed at him for a home run to center field. By the end of the 2nd inning, the White Sox took an early lead on the Athletics with the score at 5-0 White Sox. In the bottom of the 4th inning White Sox batter Jose Abreu homered a ball to left field for a 2-run home run. By the end of the 4th inning the White Sox extended the lead to 8-0.

White Sox Defense was Unbreachable

In the top of the 6th inning, White Sox pitcher Ryan Burr relieved Lopez at the mound. The White Sox picked up another double play to shut down the Athletics offense. In the bottom of the 6th, White Sox batter Tim Anderson hit a line drive to center field for an RBI triple.  By the end of the 6th inning, the White Sox put the nail in the coffin of this game by further extending the lead to 9-0 White Sox. In the top of the 7th inning, the White Sox defense picked up another double play to bring it to the bottom of the inning. The Athletics retaliated with picking up a double play against the White Sox that quickly brought the game to the 8th inning. In the top of the 8th, White Sox pitcher Mike Wright replaced Burr at the mound. In that same inning, the Athletics were caught again in a double play.  In the top of the 9th, Wright threw for a pop out, strikeout, and groundout to close out the game. The White Sox beat the Athletics 9-0.
