Spyropoulos Takes Strong Lead on Election Night (Cook County, IL) — Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos drew a strong early lead Tuesday night in the contest to be the next Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, one of the largest unified court systems in the United States.

“The Clerk’s office is a critical part of our justice system. Today we need that system to be far more transparent and accountable,” Spyropoulos said. “On Day 1 we will work to make our courts more accessible, root out corruption and help victims. I look forward to making good on the campaign promises that have drawn such a wide range of diverse support from across the county.”

In March, Spyropoulos won the Democratic primary for Clerk with 65 percent of the vote, securing a majority vote in 90 percent of voting districts across Chicago’s 50 wards, the county’s 29 townships and Evanston.

A former assistant state’s attorney, Spyropoulos earned her law degree at UIC Law and her MBA from Loyola University Chicago. She was elected to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Board of Commissioners (MWRD) in 2010 and served as Board President from 2015-2019.

As MWRD president, Spyropoulos embraced green infrastructure and oversaw the disinfection of Chicago’s waterways – a project that directly benefited the region and created jobs. She also maintained the MWRD’s AAA bond rating and pushed for transparency by introducing independent oversight of the district and live streaming of board meetings.

The Clerk’s office maintains court records for all criminal, civil, juvenile and traffic courtrooms in Cook County and helps serve the judiciary, attorneys and the public in managing and accessing the court system.
