Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards Presented to Area Leaders (Alsip, IL) — The Southland Black Chamber of Commerce celebrated Juneteenth with their annual Juneteenth Awards Gala at the DoubleTree Hilton in Alsip. To help ring in the momentous holiday, Congressman Jonathan Jackson and Congressman Danny K. Davis joined Chamber Chair Dr. Cornel Darden Jr. and Board Member Marcus Jefferson in conferring four Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards.
The awardees at tonight’s ceremony included Tio “Mr. Ceasefire” Hardiman, Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon (5th District), Mayor Vernard Alsberry (Hazel Crest), and Wallace “Gator” Bradley. They were awarded for their commitment to service, including their work with various nonprofits related to education, domestic violence, violence prevention, and more.
About Tio “Mr. CeaseFire” Hardiman
Tio “Mr. Ceasefire” Hardiman has been known in the Chicago area and nationally for this acclaimed with in the nonviolence sector. He is a radio personality with a Sunday morning talk show on WVON. In 2018, Hardiman ran in the Democratic Primary Election for Illinois Governor. His nonprofit organization, Violence Interrupters, focuses on high level gang mediation and stopping retaliations.
About Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon
Monica Gordon is Cook County’s newly elected commissioner, serving the 5th district. She took the place of retired commissioner Deborah Sims. Her volunteer history includes working with survivors of domestic violence and rape, and working with various nonprofits that focus on education, especially education for girls.
About Mayor Vernard Alsberry
Vernard Alsberry has been serving as mayor of the Village of Hazel Crest since 2013. Mayor Alsberry holds a Master’s in Public Administration, Governors State University. A Bachelor’s in Health Administration, Governors State University. Associate of Science degrees in Physical Therapy, University of Mississippi, and Community College of the Air Force. He has volunteered his time with the South Suburban United Way and the Southland Regional Mayoral Black Caucus.
About Wallace “Gator” Bradley
Wallace “Gator” Bradley has been working as a community nonviolence activist for decades. He has worked to successfully deescalate violent situations on Chicago’s south and west sides. His work centers on advocacy and policy, including statewide legislative policy and program development; public relations; and communications and engagement.
