Formerly Homeless Business Owners Create Non-Profit to Assist Homeless Families and Children (Flossmoor, IL) — Once homeowners more than 20 years ago, entrepreneurs Sean and Michiel Burnett fell prey to an adjusted loan rate which caused them to lose their home. After living with relatives, renting and even staying in hotels, they have recovered from their circumstances and closed on a beautiful new home last week. Even in the midst of their struggles, the Burnetts created DBC Gifts of Love, a non-profit organization created to help homeless children and their families.

“Homelessness can happen to anyone,” said Michiel Burnett. “We were blessed with a supportive village who didn’t judge us for the mistakes we made.”

On Saturday, June 15th, DBC Gifts of Love will host a 5K walk/run at 4162 Vollmer in Flossmoor, IL. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and the participants step off at 9:00 a.m. The family/pet friendly event will feature food, a gametruck, inflatables, photobooth, music and more. The goal is to raise $25,000 to donate 1,000 book bags with school supplies and gift cards for uniforms to homeless school children and children in need in the Chicago Southland region (south suburbs).

“We have been doing these giveaways for a few years now, and the need continues to grow,” said Michiel Burnett. “The families are always grateful for the resources, and the children deserve the assistance, so that they can be prepared and focused for the new school year.”

The Burnetts also want to be a shining example to those who have dreams of home ownership.

“I just caution those who are in the market to buy a house to read the fine print and get the legal assistance needed with things that you may not understand,” advised Burnett. “We learned the hard way and went through some hard times, but now we are trying to be an example to help others and help them avoid the pitfalls of homelessness.”
