DeLuca Calls on Springfield to Immediately Freeze Property (Springfield, IL) – As members of the General Assembly prepare to return to Springfield, state Rep. Anthony DeLuca (D-Chicago Heights), issued the following statement calling for the immediate passage of a statewide property tax freeze during the upcoming lame duck session:
“The COVID-19 pandemic has upended all of our lives is numerous ways. During a time when so many are struggling to make ends meet, homeowners will continue to grapple with the issue of increasing property taxes. Illinois residents need property tax relief, now, more than ever before. Therefore, the prudent thing for the General Assembly to do is to take legislative action as soon as possible to address these crushing tax burdens.”
“I have voted to freeze or cut property taxes repeatedly over the past few years and we also received recommendations from the Property Tax Relief Task Force, but Illinois homeowners have still not received their long overdue relief from property taxes. This body must seriously consider implementing all the recommendations of the Task Force in addition to a property freeze in the immediate future.”
“In the days that lay ahead, there are many important decisions to make and finally following through on the promise of property tax relief needs to be one of them. COVID-19 has forced greater economic hardships onto many Illinois residents. We need to protect those same residents from being overburdened by high property taxes during a time when they can least afford it. I urge my colleagues to join me in this effort.”
