BREAKING: Clear Racial Overtones in Flossmoor’s Decision to Fire Police Chief Jerel Jones (Flossmoor, IL) — The Village of Flossmoor has voted to fire Jerel Jones, Chief of Police. The vote was split across the racial lines of the board, with Mayor Michelle Nelson being the deciding vote. Watch the decision below:
The board meeting, where dozens of residents showed up to stand in solidarity with Chief Jones, was overtaken by the public comments. Residents spoke passionately of their belief that the village was acting rashly and in a manner that was discriminatory. Blatant accusations of racism within the ranks of the village, coupled with Jones’ civil rights lawsuit filed against the village last week, did not deter the white board members from voting to fire Jones. The three black members of the board voted against his firing. Mayor Michelle Nelson was the tie-breaker, and like her white counterparts, she voted yes to the termination.
Citizens left feeling disheartened and visibly upset, still reeling from the death of Madeline Miller in July of 2022, a black woman who was shot and killed by Flossmoor police about 8 months before Jones took the job of top cop.
