Andre Smith Calls on Mayor Brandon Johnson to Cease and Desist: Demands Independence and Accountability for CPS Board (Chicago, IL) – Andre Smith, candidate for the 6th District of the Chicago Public School Board, is calling on Mayor Brandon Johnson to immediately cease any interference with the CPS board, allowing it to function independently and without harassment, pressure, or intimidation from the Mayor’s Office. Smith emphasizes that an independent CPS board is critical for the future of Chicago’s children and their education.

“With reading levels in CPS schools at just 11%, and math proficiency at a staggering 8%, it is clear that the system is failing our children, especially in the Black community, where only 79% of students graduate,” said Smith. “The graduation rate is simply not enough when students are not proficient in the basic skills required for success. Our children deserve better.”

Since 2018, the CPS budget has steadily increased from $6.4 billion, with a per-student allocation of $17,265, to a staggering $9.4 billion in 2024, equating to $29,169 per student. Despite this, student achievement levels have plummeted. “The budget keeps increasing without the transparency and accountability our students and taxpayers deserve. How can we justify a $3 billion budget increase when student enrollment is declining and our children are not learning?” Smith asks.

Smith further referenced past political interference, such as the closing of 50 schools in 2013 and the resignation of the entire CPS board—a move unprecedented in Chicago’s history. “For too long, mayoral control has negatively impacted our schools. It is time for that to end. As a taxpayer and a candidate for the school board, I am demanding an independent audit of CPS finances. Chicago’s taxpayers contribute $5 billion to the CPS budget, and they have the right to know where their money is going and why it isn’t resulting in better outcomes for students.”

Smith is also calling for a transparent process in electing new board members. “The Mayor must allow a truly independent CPS board, not one controlled by the Mayor’s office or influenced by the Chicago Teachers Union. Chicago’s families deserve board members who will be accountable until the newly elected members are chosen by the voters on November 5th.”

As a strong advocate for transparency and educational reform, Andre Smith continues his campaign with a focus on improving student outcomes, fiscal responsibility, and a fully independent CPS board free from political pressure.
