White Sox win in Wrigley field in the first game of the city series (Chicago, Illinois) – The White Sox played the city series against the Cubs in Wrigley Field and wanted to start with their best foot forward. In the top of the 1st inning, the White Sox were caught in a double play with White Sox batter Eloy Jimenez grounding it out and then a throw to 2nd base that brought it to the bottom of the 1st. In the bottom of the 1st inning, White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn took the mound to throw out the first pitch for the White Sox. Both the 2nd and 3rd inning both teams displayed great defense with many groundouts, lineouts, fly outs, and strikeouts. In the top of the 4th, inning White Sox batter Adam Engel hit a single then continued to move to 2nd base and steal 3rd base. White Sox batter Andrew Vaughn took home plate and singled on a line drive to center field to give Engel enough time to make it home. Soon after, White Sox batter Seby Zavala hit an RBI single to extend the lead over the Cubs 2-0 by the end of the 4th inning.

A Civil War in Chicago

The 5th and 6th innings consisted of many strikeouts, lineouts, and pop outs by both teams. In the bottom of the 7th inning, White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech relieved Lynn at the mound after 98 pitches. Soon after the pitching swap, Cub’s batter David Bote hit a sacrifice fly to keep up with the White Sox. The score was 2-1 by the end of the 7th inning. In the top of the 8th, White Sox batter Cesar Hernandez hit a 2-run home run to push away from the Cubs with the score at 4-1. In the bottom of that inning, Cubs batter Andrew Romine homered on a fly ball to center field and brought home 2 men on bases.  They tied the game at 4-4 going into the 9th inning. With Codi Heuer at the mound, the White Sox managed to take no damage in the 9th inning.  The Cubs were all struck out and the game went into extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, White Sox batter Brian Goodwin hit a ball to center field for a 2-run home run. Gavin Sheets hit an RBI single and then White Sox batter Tim Anderson also hit an RBI single that brought the game to 8-4 White Sox. In the bottom of the 10th, White Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet took the mound to close the inning. Cubs batter Frank Schwindel crushed a 2-run homer to left center field to bring the score to 8-6 White Sox. Crochet threw for a pop out, flyout, and a lineout to close out the game. The White Sox beat the Cubs 8-6.
