Suspicious Vehicle Leads to Multiple Gun Arrests (Orland Park, IL) — On Wednesday (04/13/22) at approximately 6:45 PM, Orland Park Police officers patrolling the parking lot of Orland Square Mall noticed a strong odor of cannabis. While investigating, officers observed three individuals exit a blue vehicle and enter the mall.

Officers approached the vehicle where they observed a backpack on the front passenger seat, a bag of cannabis and saw a Glock handgun with an extended magazine on the rear floorboard. Officers waited at the vehicle for the occupants to return as other officers entered the mall and attempted to locate the individuals.

A short time later one of the individuals returned to the vehicle, later identified as Garcell D. James, and enter the vehicle driver’s seat. As officers approached, James exited the vehicle holding a black handgun in his hand. James began to run through the mall parking lot while officers pursued him, ignoring repeated orders to drop the gun and stop. James ignored the orders and continued to run away but tripped as officers were gaining ground on him. As the closest officer jumped on James, James kicked the officer in the face and began to run away again. James then threw the handgun to the ground and was eventually taken into custody by other officers in pursuit. The loaded handgun was also recovered. The subsequent investigation revealed that James is a convicted felon currently on parole for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Officers located the remaining individuals inside the mall and they were detained. A search of the vehicle lead to the discovery of another handgun along with a Draco Ak-47 inside the backpack with a box of 9mm ammunition.

The driver, now known to be Deshaun Wesley, was arrested at this time. The other individual was released from the scene due to his active concealed carry holder status.

On 04/15/21, James and Wesley were transported to Bridgeview Courthouse where the Honorable Judge Havis set the bond at $100,000D (@10% $10,000) for James and $25,000D (@10% $2,500) for Wesley.

The officer that was struck by James was transported to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released.
