Robbins Council Votes “Yes” to MWRD Project, Hires New Officers, and More (Robbins, IL) — The Robbins Regular Council Meeting was called to order by Mayor Darren E. Bryant. All trustees and the clerk were present and a quorum was established. For their first order of business, the Robbins Village Council approved the minutes from the special meetings of October 23, 2021 and November 2, 2021, and the regular meeting of November 9, 2021. The meeting continued with Clerk Dyson reading several announcements into record. For her final announcement, Clerk Dyson said that the new vehicle stickers were for sale at Village Hall. The sticker was designed by young Camara Brewer, a 7th grader at Kellar School and a village resident. The village presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

The mayor then went on to recognize the Midwest Seahawks, Illinois UYFL Champions. He declared December 14 as Midwest Seahawks Day and presented them with a proclamation.

Mayor Bryant also touched on the issue of violence in the community and urged citizens to call the police. He also promised more speed bumps before summer 2022. He also said he was working diligently on bringing a grocery store to the village. This appeared to agree with the citizens in attendance.

Trustee Brewton said that there was no treasurer’s report, then continued on to provide a report on the total cost for the annual village festival, which was over $33,000. The village raised over $17,600 and the village covered the rest of the cost.

The village administrator, Jasmine Washington, provided her report and once again asked for patience from the citizens. She said that they are working diligently to create processes that work while also working to create a proper budget.

Trustee Robinson provided a report as well. She asked for citizens to call 9-1-1 if they are aware of any crimes. She is working with Chief Sheppard and Deputy Chief Redmond to find grants. She also spoke on the Shop with a Cop event the village is putting on for the children of Robbins. The event will be on Saturday.

Police Chief David Sheppard provided a report to the citizens. He said that it was suggested to him that the police find social media profiles of criminal suspects and pull any incriminating images in order to advocate for high bond amounts. He also reported that they are working with several surrounding communities who also utilize the FLOCK license plate readers. The village has also hired a new juvenile detective, who is to start soon. He explained the backlog in academy training and took questions from the citizens and trustees.

The annual tax levy was passed without issue. The board also approved the warrant lists in the amounts of $29,930.37 and $5,148.65, municipal calendar dates for 2022, and approved the hire of 2 police officers.

The council, after some discussion, approved a resolution to amend the intergovernmental agreement with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District for the acquisition of parcels of land for a flood control project. Trustees Jackson and Dyson, who have spoken out against the project in the past, voted no, while the other trustees voted yes. The project is supposed to help mitigate the flooding along Kedzie Avenue at 135th Street. The trustees then also moved quickly to approve the acquisition of 7 parcels of land from the Cook County Land Bank Authority, which will be turned over for the MWRD project. The item passed unanimously.

The final item on the agenda was the approval of a new village logo/seal. After some discussion and explanation of the change, the ordinance was approved unanimously.
