OpEd: Looking for Property Tax Relief? Our Offices Are Here to Help (Cook County, IL) — We all know that South Chicago is home to a variety of iconic skyscrapers, industrial thoroughfares, and bustling neighborhoods with our favorite local businesses. It’s without question that South Chicago is not only a major driver of our economy, but a diverse and welcoming community that many call home. In fact, properties in South Chicago Township made up 20% of Chicago’s total assessed value as of 2018. But this dynamic part of Chicago is not immune to the challenges that our city, and Cook County more broadly, have faced with property taxes for decades. We’re writing to let you know that our offices with the Cook County Board of Review are here to help if you are seeking property tax relief.
Taxpayers in South Chicago Township have until Tuesday, February 4th to appeal the assessed values of their homes to the Cook County Board of Review. While increases in total assessed values don’t necessarily guarantee higher property tax bills, they will likely play a role in any property tax bill increases that South Chicago might see in 2025. Knowing this, we encourage you to appeal your property’s assessed value to the Board of Review. In taking one step further, you should appeal every year from here on out: it’s free and cannot increase your assessment, regardless of the appeal’s outcome.
With South Chicago being chock-full of economic activity and some of our favorite neighborhoods, we need to ensure that residents aren’t being taxed out of the communities they love. One step you, your friends, family, and neighbors can take today to potentially receive property tax relief in the future is to appeal with the Board of Review.
