Monica Gordon, Candidate for 5th District Cook County Commissioner, Details her Platform on Public Safety (Cook County, IL) — Today, Monica Gordon, candidate for 5th District Cook County Commissioner, detailed her plans for public safety if elected.
“Public safety is not only a core responsibility of the Cook County Board, but it is essential to the stability of our communities,” said Gordon. “Just this weekend, the violence hit close to home during a shooting incident at a Walmart supercenter in Olympia Fields. This incident was just the latest, as we know other communities in the 5th District, and throughout Cook County, struggle with violence. We must work together to create safe communities and take an approach that balances public safety while also mitigating the root causes of violence.”
If elected Commissioner, Gordon will prioritize the following initiatives related to public safety:
-
Working to ensure all communities have access to resources from law enforcement while promoting police accountability.
-
Advocating for funding and resource opportunities in the areas of youth development, violence prevention, safety infrastructure, reentry, and substance abuse.
-
Working with the Cook County Justice Advisory Council to support violence prevention programming and grants in the 5th District.
-
Supporting increased funding for mental health support and resources for mental health interventions without resorting to a law enforcement response.
-
Promoting community engagement and supporting local initiatives such as block clubs, neighborhood watch, and more.
-
Supporting and partnering for fair and equitable practices in law enforcement across local governments and in coordination with the County’s criminal justice stakeholders including the offices of the Sheriff, State’s Attorney, and Chief Judge.
-
Coordinating with local elected officials, such as State Senators and State Representatives in the 5th district, to support legislation in Springfield related to public safety and gun control measures.
