Mayor and State Representative Thaddeus Jones Sued for Sexual Harassment (Calumet City, IL) — Calumet City Clerk Nyota Figgs as filed a lawsuit against Mayor Thaddeus Jones, alleging numerous claims of sexual harassment over several years. Figgs has been the clerk in Calumet City since being appointed in 2011 by then-mayor Michelle Qualkinbush. Theddeus Jones also serves as state representative for the 29th district.

The lawsuit, filed in Cook County, names Thaddeus Jones individually and in his capacity of Mayor of Calumet City as defendants. According to the complaint, Nyota Figgs first met Thaddeus Jones in or around 2005, and soon after began a romantic relationship with him. The complaint then states that, “At the time, Clerk Figgs was just beginning to enter the world of politics that Mayor Jones was already influential in.” Jones was not Mayor or a state representative at that time.

Figgs then alleges that Jones would often use his position of power against her, stating, “My politics will always survive. Watch your back when I get there.” According to Figgs, the harassment continued throughout the duration of their relationship, which lasted until around 2013. The complaints states that Jones continued to harass Figgs, even going so far as sending the following texts and emails:

  • “I have powerful friends…”
  • “My politics will always survive. Watch your back when I get there.”
  • “Okay, you are officially on my hit list, and you can take that any way you want to.”
  • “Have you ever stopped and wondered why you are not in a stable relationship”
  • “I hope you really consider running against me, it will be the last time you ever run for anything…”

The complaint also states that Jones attempted to revive their relationship about 2 months before  being elected mayor of Calumet City in the spring of 2021.

Upon taking office, Jones then began to strip Nyota Figgs of her statutory duties as Clerk, at times going against city code to do so. Some of the other complaints against Jones in the lawsuit state that he changed her locks to her office, installed security cameras in her office, had items removed from her office without her consent, removed her ability to hire and fire staff for the Clerk’s office, removed email access, and more. These and other incidents have, according to the lawsuit, resulted in Figgs living in fear, embarrassment, and shame. She is suing for an amount to be determined at trial.

  1. Typical political in-fighting. He is a Madigan puppet who takes orders. She is loyal to the previous mayor who appointed her to that position. These two need to keep their sordid personal affairs and transgressions out of the public domain, and stop wasting tax dollars with petty lawsuits. They need to act like adults, and attempt (or at least pretend) to be model citizens to the residents they represent. Shameful of both parties.
