Karin Norington-Reaves on Uvalde Shooting and Increased Gun Violence Across the U.S.  (Chicago, IL) — Democratic candidate for Congress Karin Norington-Reaves issued the following statement following the Uvalde shooting and increased gun violence in Chicago and across the county:

“When will we say enough is enough? Yesterday’s senseless act of violence joins a long list of tragedies that have resulted in dozens of people being shot and killed. Mass shootings and gun violence are on the rise, plaguing our communities and destroying families.

“Our children – and the adults entrusted with their care – have been ruthlessly slaughtered with military-grade weapons, and the killings will only continue unless we act.

“We must hold our elected officials accountable and demand reform to gun safety laws to keep our families and communities safe. We must also create universal background checks, close loopholes for online and straw gun purchases, ban ghost guns and the creation of the component parts, and ban military-grade weapons from civilian use or possession.

“We can do this together because we are not powerless. We can and must do better – our children deserve no less.”

Since the tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook elementary, 10 years ago this year, there have been over 900 school shootings. In 2022 alone, 39 shootings have taken place in K-12 schools, college campuses and universities. School shootings and gun violence have increased nationwide, horrifying and traumatizing children, parents and teachers alike.

The House passed the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021 and the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, these bills are now with the U.S. Senate. The legislation would seek to extend background check times and expand background checks for all firearm sales or transfers in the country, respectively.

“Congress has a responsibility to protect our country and its citizens. Our thoughts and prayers are not enough. Our Senators must act now to pass these bills and provide much-needed gun reform. We must put an end to these mass shootings,” continued Norington-Reaves.
