“I stood with Davis Gates and the late CTU President Karen Lewis in demonstrations against school closings in black and brown Chicago communities during the years 2010 to 2013,” Jackson pointed out. “I can personally attest to her commitment to our teachers and our children.”

“She is the right person to lead CTU through this most challenging time of social/racial/economic upheaval, shifting political landscapes, and an ongoing pandemic,” Jackson added. “Davis Gates is prepared, having been a teacher for more than 10 years. She’s qualified by her previous roles as CTU Political and Legislative Director and Executive Vice President, through which she has spearheaded legislative campaigns and overseen historic contract negotiations. And she is motivated to continue to advocate for the rights of CTU members and quality public education in Chicago. Through her additional involvement in the United Working Families organization and the Action Center on Race & the Economy (ACRE), Davis Gates demonstrates how thoroughly vested she is in ensuring that teachers, staff, and schools are ready and fully supported to meet the various, critical needs of all Chicago public school children in every sector of the city.

“Her track record of working on CTU-related issues is unmatched. I’m looking forward to seeing more great things from new CTU President Davis Gates,” concluded Jackson.
