JoJo the Boxer Stuns with Another Huge Win on Saturday (Cicero, IL) — Another big win for young Joliet-native boxing sensation Joseph “JoJo” Awinongya Jr. came this weekend at the Chicago Golden Gloves Tournament held in Cicero. The 16-year old college junior holds 20 national boxing championship titles and has fought in 160 bouts, arguably making him the best adolescent boxer in America, and the very best to ever come out of Illinois.

Saturday evening, in a stadium packed with his fans which included former Secretary of State Jesse White and Father Michael Pfleger, young JoJo took to the ring to solidify his place at the top of the pack, beating out opponent Yandel Hernandez in a unanimous decision in the tournament’s 165 lbs. weight class bout. Loud cheers and whoops echoed throughout the stadium as JoJo fought and sent the message that he is clearly a fan-favorite.

“I feel happy right now,” said JoJo after his win. “This feels just like winning another national championship, fighting in my hometown of Chicago. It means everything. A lot of people came out to watch me and I’m very thankful.”

JoJo now heads to the Golden Gloves National Tournament of Championship to bring home yet another national championship title. The tournament will be held from Monday, May 13 through Saturday, May 18 at the Huntington Place Convention Center in Detroit, MI.

The approaching tournament comes as JoJo is training with the USA Boxing Youth Team in preparation for the 2028 Summer Olympics, and while the young man maintains a full course load as a junior student at St. Francis University in Joliet pursuing a Bachelor’s degree. He hopes to have a Master’s degree by the time he is 18. Sixteen year old JoJo currently holds an Associates degree from Joliet Junior College.
