Diana López Wants to Bring Diversity, Representation and Equal Access to the Court (Cook County, IL) – Judge Diana López understands the impact the judges can have on the community.
“I would like to be a full Cook County Circuit Judge, because it’s really important to me to be voted by the constituents of Cook County so that number one, the judiciary reflects the diversity of the constituents of Cook County,” she said. “Then also to be part of the process and diversify the bench by having the vote and a seat at the table when it comes to choosing and voting for qualified associate judge candidates. It is woefully underrepresented right now, not only by women, but by brown and black candidates who are qualified. I am a qualified candidate, I have been found qualified by all the bar associations that have evaluated judicial candidates. I’ve been endorsed by various unions and union organizations, I’m very proud of that.”
Equal Access
López has fought for equal access to justice for children and families of all backgrounds. She was appointed as a Cook County Associate Judge on October 4, 2021. A first-generation daughter of immigrants, she is committed to being a steward for justice, family values, and the wellbeing of children in the judicial system. Over the last 20, she served thousands of families in crisis situations and helped to make informed decisions that were in the best interests of children and families.
“What I bring to the bench is a listening ear and an empathetic ear,” said López “I bring even temperament, and all the things that I was able to hone and gain from my practice, especially representing children.”
Experience
López volunteered her services to many area organizations during her law career, including at the National Immigrant Justice Center, the Chicago Bar Association, and Greenlight Family Services. In 2018, she joined the board of the Schiller DuCanto & Fleck Family Law Center and is currently Vice-Chair of the Advisory Board. She also holds current board appointments at the Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts and Greenlight Family Services, where she presides as the Executive Board Secretary.
“You vote for all of these different positions of elected officials. But of all of those elected officials, the judges are the ones that you most are likely to see in your life, whether it’s child support court, in marriage court, in adoption court and eviction court,” said López. “Those are really important decisions that voters need to make, and they need to be very informed. I hope that the voters that are watching this educate themselves and really look into the qualifications of each candidate before they go and vote on June 28.”
Daughter of Immigrants
López is an advocate for civility, professionalism, diversity, and inclusion. Her commitment has been shown in her roles as chair and vice-chair for Chicago Bar Association’s Adoption Law Committee. Super Lawyers Magazine named her an “Illinois Rising Star” in 2014 & 2015. She was honored by her peers and selected as an “Illinois Super Lawyer.” Since 2006 and has been appointed as Guardian ad Litem for the County Division Adoption Court and in the Domestic Relations Division in Cook County, since 2015. She is an active member of Illinois Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, the Hispanic Lawyers of Illinois, Women’s Bar Association of Illinois and the DuPage County Bar Association.
“I’m a daughter of immigrants. I bring their work ethic that they brought from their countries and implemented in our daily lives. My siblings and I were able to go on to higher education with their help and support,” she said. “I stand on the shoulders of my grandparents who also were champions in having us have that strong work ethic that we bring to our daily lives, no matter what other obstacles we encounter.”
