Circuit Court Approves Carmen Navarro Gercone Name for Ballot in Race for Cook County Sheriff (Cook County, IL) – Today, Carmen Navarro Gercone and the legal team comprised of attorneys Cass T. Casper, Richard Linden, Peter Bustamante, Paul C. Lillios, and Scott B. Erdman, received a ruling from Circuit Court Judge Nichole Patton, that a previous decision by the County Officers Electoral Board to remove Navarro Gercone’s name from the ballot was overturned and considered it to be “arbitrary.”

Furthermore, her name shall be included on the ballot in the June 28, 2022 race for Cook County Sheriff. This decision was announced after more than two hours of arguments by attorneys from the offices of the Illinois Attorney General, Cook County Clerk, City of Chicago Board of Elections, Illinois Sheriff’s Association and the objectors as well as Navarro Gercone’s legal team. The objectors included David Feller, Tom Dart’s campaign manager.

“We are pleased with the Court’s decision. Today is a victory for ballot access and the right for the voters of Cook County to choose their elected officials. We agree with the court that the electoral board improperly delegated its decision-making authority to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board” reads a joint statement from Navarro Gercone attorneys.

Judgement

The judgment was announced at about 11:45 am and a written order has been issued. “This morning, the Honorable Nichole Patton reversed a politicized decision by the Cook County Electoral Board to eliminate my candidacy for Cook County Sheriff. I am so thankful to Judge Patton for her ruling, which was impartial, professional, and followed the rule of law. She restored my faith in our court system. I am a 26-year veteran of law enforcement and I have been trained by violence reduction experts from around the world. I will be ready on day one.” says Navarro Gercone.

The Climate Crisis Is Worse Than You Can Imagine. Here’s What Happens If You Try. – Peter Kalmus, out of his mind, stumbled back toward the car. It was all happening. All the stuff he’d been trying to get others to see, and failing to get others to see — it was all here. The day before, when his family started their Labor Day backpacking trip along the oak-lined dry creek bed in Romero Canyon, in the mountains east of Santa Barbara, the temperature had been 105 degrees. Now it was 110 degrees, and under his backpack, his “large mammalian self,” as Peter called his body, was more than just overheating. He was melting down. Everything felt wrong. His brain felt wrong and the planet felt wrong, and everything that lived on the planet felt wrong, off-kilter, in the wrong place.
