Chief Apostle Dr. William MCCoy and other Illinois Pastors Endorse Pat Dowell for Illinois Secretary of State (Chicago, IL) – This week a large contingent of clergy gathered for a fundraiser to show their support and endorse Alderman Pat Dowell in her bid for Democratic nominee for Illinois Secretary of State.

The group included Reverend James Bailey, Pastor T.L. Barrett, Dr. Phalese Binion, Bishop Michael Bonds, Pastor Vera Bonds, Reverend James Boyd, Bishop Byron Brazier, Reverend EJ Brown, Rev Eric Clopton, Bishop Shirely Coleman, Reverend Robbie Craig, Pastor Michael Eaddy, Pastor Latonja Ellis, Pastor Dwayne Gary, Pastor Earl Grandberry, Reverend John Harrell, Pastor Chris Harris, Bishop Joseph Jones, Bishop Benard Kendrick, Chief Apostle Dr. William McCoy, Elder Lafayette McGary, Reverend Keith McGee, Presiding Elder James Moody, Pastor LaMarr Morgane, Bishop Milton Oliver, Bishop Claude Porter, Reverend Michael Runnels, Reverend Leslie Sanders, Pastor Deborah Scott, Bishop Horace Smith, Reverend Jennifer Tinsley, Pastor Eric Thomas, Reverend Walter Turner, Pastor Troy Venning, Reverend Craig Williams and Apostle Angela Walker.

Many of the endorsing ministers came together last week at a fundraiser for Dowell honoring her leadership and public service, all agree that Dowell is the candidate best positioned to protect voting rights in the coming months and years.

They also cited Congresswoman Maxine Waters who said it best: “Black women have shown that not only will they vote, but they will get out the vote. And they will fight for the vote.”

The ministers said that they are endorsing Dowell out of recognition that she is the most qualified candidate and that Black women are the Democratic Party’s most loyal voting group. Despite the recent actions of the Cook County Democratic Party, this group understands that Black women have carried the Democratic party time after time before across our state and country.

With attacks on election institutions increasing, Illinois can’t afford to go back to the tragedy and corruption that occurred when Republicans ran this office. The pastors recognized that we need a Democratic nominee who will fight tirelessly to protect ballot access for all citizens, someone who can gain the respect of Democratic voters, and someone who will put public service first – not use this as a self-serving stepping stone to advance their career.
