Chicago Heights City Council OKs Plan to Beautify Future Developments (Chicago Heights, IL) – Taking stock of current and future development in the city, Monday night the Chicago Heights City Council approved a proposal from site design group ltd for architectural landscape design and review services.

Mayor David Gonzalez said that the city wants to ensure that the landscaping in new projects is aesthetically pleasing and congruent with the city’s ideas for the project. He said many projects receive tax breaks and other incentives from the city and having an architectural design firm overseeing these projects from idea to completion would ensure that the landscaping is completed, and to project specifications.

Design

Founded in 1990, site design group is a landscape architecture, urban design and architecture firm based in Chicago. They supply professional design services to architects, engineers, municipalities, corporations, and institutions in Chicago, the United States and Asia. Gonzalez noted two development projects for which the council earlier that evening had approved Cook County Class 8 Tax Classifications.

Morgan Li received approval for the industrial property at 1001 Washington St., and P&J Properties received approval for the industrial property located at 210 E. 12 th St. He said site design would ensure that the landscaping for these and future projects would be completed to project specifications. Jack Hynes, the city’s economic development director, told the council that Morgan Li was looking to expand manufacturing capabilities and was looking for new space for its headquarters.

Tax Break

The tax break for the Washington Street property would allow them to grow, create jobs and keep their headquarters in Chicago Heights. Hynes said that Wilkens Rebuilders was also looking to expand and the tax break for the 12th Street project would create 35 to 50 new jobs. He said the two projects were close enough together that they would give a huge economic boost to that area.

Continuing the tax talk, Chicago Heights Finance Director Les Swintek outlined details of the 2021 Chicago Heights property tax levy. He said the levy essentially remained the same from the previous year. After his presentation, the council approved the tax levy for corporate purposes and special funds for the fiscal year beginning May 1, 2021 and ending April 30, 2022.

In other business, the council approved:

  • The assignment of the city’s redevelopment agreement with Setzer Properties XGH, LLC
    to Setzer Properties XGH DE, LLC;
  • The city’s liability, property and casualty and workers compensation insurance policies and premiums for 2022;
  • A deed in lieu of foreclosure agreement for acquisition of the commercial property at 1800-1816 Chicago Road. This is the site of the former Leising Lumber company;
  • Authorized City Counsel T.J. Somer to get rid of the city’s surplus vehicles.
