Calumet City Council: 11/8/2021 (Calumet City, IL) – The Calumet City Council held a regular meeting on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. The meeting began with the pledge and a prayer. After no public comments were made, the board went on to approve minutes from previous meetings.

The aldermen then gave reports from their standing committees:

  • Finance: no report

  • Public Safety: no report

  • Public utility: no report

  • Ordinance and resolution: no report

  • Health, education, welfare: no report

  • Permits and license: Soon there will be a meeting called to review changes to the village’s permits and licensing, according to Ald. Patton.

  • Public works: there will be a public works meeting held on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.

Next came the city council reports:

  • Mayor Jones

  • Alderman Smith – Smith said a meeting for his ward will be held on Nov. 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Public Safety Training Center.

  • Alderman Garner – He said if residents “see something in the community, say something if you need services, or for any issues please report them to my office at 708-891-8195.” He also mentioned the city council’s free turkey giveaway which will be held on. To find out more about it, residents can call his office.

  • Alderman Williams – the 4th ward will host a food basket giveaway on Nov. 20. The first giveaway will be from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The second will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 pm at 1954 Memorial Drive.

  • Alderman Tillman reminded residents of the council’s Nov. 20 turkey giveaway

  • Aldwoman Wilson reminded the audience that council members will be celebrating its veterans on Nov. 11. “We are the land of the free because of the brave. Never forget that,” she said.

  • Alderman Naverrete said there will be a ceremony for veterans at the Holy Cross cemetery at 801 Michigan road on veterans day.

During the informational items portion of the meeting, a representative from Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s office gave a presentation about rent and water bill assistance residents will be able to apply for on Dec. 6. Other approved items:

  • Letter to Senator Durbin, Senator Duckworth, Congresswoman Robin Kelly congratulating them on the passage of the infrastructure bill and submitting Calumet City’s $100 million dollar request for funding. Ald. will add project rejects to a list that will be sent to the state. The council has until about Jan. 1 to send the list

  • Letter from Scott McGuire stating Air One Equipment is the only authorized fire service supplier for Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

  • Inspectional weekly report for River Oaks Mall

  • Inspectional report for River Oaks Mall Food Court

  • Accept and execute a Resolution to utilize Motor Fuel Tax funds for the 2021 General Maintenance expenditures needed for Public Works maintenance of City roads sidewalks, right-of-way, and materials and to appropriate in MFT funds an allocation of a sum of $540,000.00.

  • Direct the Public Works department to install a Resident Only parking sign at 526 Manistee.
