Rep. Davis, local and national farmers to host urban symposium during DNC (Chicago, IL) —Rep Danny K. Davis (D-7th) is hosting an urban farmer agricultural symposium Monday, August 19th, from 2:30: p.m. – 5 p.m. at the Royal Sonesta Hotel, 71 E. Wacker Drive, where he some farmers and will discuss the importance of expanding urban farming in Chicago and other cities across the nation.

With food insecurity on the rise worldwide including 44 million in America alone, Rep. Davis said, “Urban farming is important and key to expanding healthy, home-grown food in vacant lots. I have a garden in my back yard. I have grown some of the biggest cucumbers and tomatoes ever. I can fix my own salad. We have many vacant lots in Chicago alone where we can grow fresh food,” said Davis who is the s on of a proud sharecropper.

One of the key organizers for the urban agricultural event is Don Patterson, president of Urban Transformation Network, who has an indoor farm on the west side of Chicago and is building a stand-alone building where vegetables, fruits and flowers will be grown. Patterson said high school youth farmers will showcase their trade including a cooking show. There will be a “taste and see” segment.

“Farm-raised products will be presented where you can taste and see healthy urban grown produce as well as discussions on farm technology and where this industry is going in the future,” Patterson said. There will also be guest from the Democratic National Convention who are on the agricultural committee to talk about the status of urban farming in America.

Joining Rep. Davis will be Rep. Jonathan Jackson (D-1st), Rep. Robin Kelly (D-2nd), Rep. La Shawn Ford (D-8th),

City Council Black Caucus, and the Democratic Party of Illinois.
